Kawakami Onsen 川上温泉
磐梯町 Bandai Town, 福島県 Fukushima

Near the 荒人神社 Kojin Jinja of 磐梯村 Baidaimura there is a swamp called 平洗澤 Araidaisawa swamp.
Once there lived a couple that used to rob travelers, kill them and throw them into this swamp.
Many years later a Samurai with a white beard appeared in the dream of the woman. He told her:
"If you stop your bad ways, I will show you a sacred spring."
Next morning she went to the spot and found a hot spring coming out from under a rock. This is
Kawakami Onsen 川上温泉.

Togura Onsen 戸倉温泉 Togura Hot Spring

- quote -
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen (戸倉上山田温泉)
is a hot spring town in Nagano Prefecture, situated between Karuizawa and Nagano City. It sits in a valley by the banks of the Chikuma River at the foot of a small but noteworthy mountain fortress. The town offers good sulfuric waters and has traditionally been used as a stopover by visitors to Zenkoji Temple in nearby Nagano. What differentiates Togura Kamiyamada Onsen from your average onsen town is the presence of Tyler Lynch, a tall American who runs one of the local ryokan and contributes to making the town more accessible to foreign tourists than other onsen towns.

Yoshioka Onsen 吉岡温泉
Tottori 鳥取市 - part of the Inaba Onsen Resorts 因幡温泉郷

About 1000 years ago
at the foot of Mount Jubusan 鷲峰山 there lived the elder Ashioka 葦岡長者. There was also a beautiful girl who suddenly disfigured with scars by an epidemic. The elder tried all kinds of medicine to help her, but nothing worked.
One evening at sunset the statue of Yakushi Nyorai from Shobuyama 菖蒲山 appeared in his dream. The Buddha of Healing told him to look below the willow tree for sacred hot spring - and as you can guess - the girl was healed and so are many more nowadays.
The grave of the Elder is still there, and about 13 hot spring hotels are now doing business.

Shinto Onsen purification

Going with the flow: Onsen hot springs as part of Shinto
Wherever your destination in Japan, you are sure to encounter an onsen – or several. These natural hot spring bathing facilities are scattered across the country, taking advantage of the geothermically active landscape. Some are outdoors, some indoors, some attached to large hotels and others in secluded natural settings – but all are part of the ritual cleanliness which permeates all of Japan’s society. Shintoism is based around ideas of purification and cleanliness, as opposed to the dirtiness associated with ‘pollution’. Water and its cleansing properties is seen as central to their way of life.

- Onsens for Shinto purification
